Who is Momma Bird?

"Momma Bird" is a nickname that was given to me by my former college roommates. A couple of years ago, I lived in a house with six boys, and believe me, they all had quite the appetites and sweet teeth. On some nights I cooked for an army, and other nights, it was just dinner for my boyfriend and I. After moving out a year ago, it's mostly been just dinners for two, with lots of leftovers.

My cooking style has changed quite a bit within just 5 years. I'm always learning new techniques, flavor profiles, and even restrictions.

My cooking and baking has always entailed lots of butter, oil, and eggs. I love rich, heavy foods, and that will probably never change, but trust me, I'm working on it. Just the other day, I made shrimp scampi with just two sticks of butter, not three.

Portion control, which will likely be the death of my boyfriend and I, is now a big priority for us. We recently starting making lasagnas, casseroles, and enchiladas in small, square baking pans (baking one and freezing the other for another dinner)instead of putting it all in a 13 x 9 baking dish.

I also cook on a rather strict budget. My boyfriend and I try to spare only $65 a week for all our household purchases, including of course groceries. That means 1-pound of shrimp or ground pork can last at least two different meals.

As I continue to cook every day, I know that I can only grow and mature as a cook. I am constantly looking for new recipes, new flavors, and new spins on old classics.

I hope this blog inspires you to do the same.
